GRANITEVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Graniteville Elementary School transformed an existing adult learning center into a new elementary school in Aiken, SC. With a modest budget and a to-do list of mostly maintenance type repairs, the project uses the things that had to be done to inhabit the school to totally transform the campus and create a compelling learning environment for its students.

This project represents individual work experience of Michael Wenzinger while employed with Goodwyn, Mills, Cawood, LLC.
Site circulation and drainage were significant issues at Graniteville Elementary School. The existing building was also split into several exterior access classroom wings. The combination of these two things created an opportunity to transform the campus and to stitch it together with outdoor landscape areas and walkways, forming outdoor classrooms and scenic routes between classes for students.

A new cafeteria addition provides a beautiful light filled space that every student can enjoy every day.
This new addition also serves as the hub of the school, offering space for large gatherings and community events.
All of the existing classrooms in the school received new, flexible furniture, allowing teachers to design the way that they want to teach in their classrooms. The desks can be arranged for traditional lecture style teaching, working in pairs with manipulatives, or working in teams on group projects
